Petra Halkes

So my school is putting on a fantastic exhibition in the ByWard Campus Gallery. Petra Halkes is an artist in the Ottawa region who has put together an amazing exhibition called Bright Lights. Bright Lights is based off photographs she took while being in the passenger seat of a moving vehicle which leaves trails of artificial fluorescent light streaking through each painting. Each piece has its own story behind in and all in all the exhibition left me wanting to drive through the city during a warm summer night.
again... i'm craving summer.

i need you...

so, i've entered a contest through the national gallery of canada. it's called "so you want to be an artist" and it gives you the opportunity to promote a piece of art through facebook and twitter, collect as many votes as you can, and the top 12 artists get their piece displayed at the national gallery along with some other dope prizes. I've already created my account and uploaded my picture, voting starts in march sometime, but keep your eyes peeled cause i'll need all the support i can get.

thanks!

Here's a little something to jumpstart the rest of your week. I couldn't add the last track so i youtube embedded it. Make sure you take a listen cause it's great and vibes in it's own way. I'm starting to like this playlist deal instead of video after video so expect more in the future.

Cosmogramma.

drypoint! another form of printing for those of you who are wondering where a sharp, needle like object is taken to a plate of plexi glass, copper, aluminum, etc. and scraped into to create an image, then printed onto soaked paper.
the inking process for drypoint has grown on me. each print isn't just rolling on the ink and shoving it through a press. although the creation of the plate doesn't take all that much time unless you've chosen to etch a slate of plexi glass the size of a small coffee table, which i will show you all soon, the inking of the plate is slightly technical i'd say. and when the print is done, you're super stoked. the plate is inked by a card, then wiped down with cheese cloth material, then intaglioed (polished) to bring out your whites. just like the middle of my piece. i've decided to keep a bit of plate tone to my piece to give it a cloudy look - i think i like it that way.
I have really come to like this print. It's simple, and i like how i used a larger piece of paper to border it. i find it gives it a little more depth. the size of the plate is only 6 x 6 inches.
flying lotus cover anyone?
i'll post my larger dry point hopefully tomorrow.
goodnight!

This is that junkyard piece that I talked about a loo00o00oong time ago that fell over and crashed everywhere into a hundred thousand million pieces. it's finally remade! i'm actually happier with it now than i was before. did a few little adjustments here and there and it's now documented so i can crash it on purpose this time and make something completely new and exciting. hope you like it!
